A Delayed Update

Twilight Imperium in full swing!

Hello out there! Sorry for the lack of updates recently. You might remember I said I'd post a tactics article on how to play the with the Rebel fleet in X-Wing. Unfortunately I chose to type it out in Word for some reason and I ended up deleting it by mistake when it was pretty much finished. This made me a bit frustrated and I couldn't find the energy to blog for a while. Plus I'm simply lazy. Haha! Don't worry though, the tactics article will make a re-appearence further on once I've absorbed the new Wave 2 ships. I have been busy playing games though so I thought I'd post a quick round-up of my gaming and geeking activities this past month.

First off, Ed from Two Hour Wargames sent me a review copy of the recently released 5150 Star Navy and I've managed to get a couple of games in. It's been an interesting experience since it's quite different from your run of the mill Full Thrust-esque game. It's more about the big scale stuff and just as much about what happens between battles as what happens during them. Some more games are needed before I feel ready to write a proper review though.

I realised that I had forgotten my GZG ships so we used figures from Twilight Imperium instead.
Worked great!

Not only was it fun to play Star Navy it also resparked my dormant passion for spaceship gaming! I've been come to the conclusion that what I'm lacking the most right now is carriers and fighter craft, so my next order from Jon at GZG will include some for both the FSE and the UNSC. I have also been looking through my collection of Babylon 5 Earth Alliance ships and managed to get hold of some old Starfury fighters for them (although I think I might use them for my UNSC as well) so there might be some B5 in the future as well.

Great haul but... sad.

In more spaceship news I got a whole box full of Lightning Strike/Jovian Chronicles models from DP9. Awesome... yes, but it was a bitter-sweet package to get as they've now discontinued their JC line of miniatures. Jovian Chronicles have been one of my great sci-fi/RPG inspirations since I got hold of the first edition book back in the late nineties. I've always wanted put together two proper fleets of Jovian and CEGA forces, but the large scale difference between the ships and the EXOs (mecha) and the price of the models you need most of have meant I kept postponing it. Now, in this final order I only bought ships as I couldn't afford enough EXOs to fill out a fleet.

Instead I'm planning to get fleet scale mecha from different sources. There are the Japanese fighters from GZG and there's a whole bunch of different variants on Shapeways (like these), besides Eli's sculpts available from 15mm.co.uk. I've even considered doing my own 3D models of Jovian Chronicles EXOs in fleet scale and print using Shapeways. I've always wanted to learn 3D modelling so this might be a good way to start. Expect to read more about Jovian Chronicles going forward, I'm not letting it go that easily!

Oh, and being inspired by both this thread on TMP and by watching the altoghether excellent remake of the original Space Battleship Yamato / Starblazers (Yamato 2199) I painted one of my Earthforce cruisers and have started working on other ships as well. I've just been using simple block colouring as it gives the model a bit more of a cartoon feel.

Hopefully the first of many.

As for the new anime series, I really can't recommend it enough! It's nothing like the absolutely awful live action film released a couple of years ago. Yamato 2199 simply modernises the original series and have made it more logical and removed some of the over the top sillyness. There are some additional characters as well and the space battles are gorgeous! Check it out!

Turn one. My fleet is lined up in formation to take over the galaxy!

Next up we played a six player game of Twilight Imperium which was a lot of fun! We haven't played it for close to a year I think as we burned out a little on it last time. I got to play the Yssaril tribes who are generally considered to be the best race, with their ability to skip turns and hoard action cards. It was a fairly close game with only the Mentak player lagging seriously behind. After having been at it for about nine hours we decided to end the game as if the Game Over card had been drawn. There were three of us sharing first place at eight victory points - me, Letnev and Sarr - but since I had the most completed objectives I was the victor. Yay! Now, don't let the nine hour play time scare you off. We take it very slow and this includes breaks for eating and lots of talking on the side. We do have another game lined up for next week that I'm looking forward to!

Finally... I've payed my first Infinity campaign game! You all probably know that I hold Infinity in very high regard, but the excellent rules and the beautiful models have sometimes feel wasted on simple deathmatch games like we've been playing up until now. Sure, there are loads of fan made scenarios, but having an official scenario/campaign book like Paradiso feels like the final piece of the puzzle being slotted in!

That's no Pangguling, I hear you say. Well, that T/O marker IS a ninja so... ha!

We (of course) played the first scenario, Data Recovery, and my opponent was the mercenary heavy Qapu Khalqi. He fielded a group of Kaplan Tactical Service, a group of Odalisques sprinkled with some specialists and a remote. I had a very diverse list featuring several different hackers (going from a Shang Ji to a Ninja) some light infantry, a couple of remotes, an Engineer and finally a Tiger Soldier and a Daofei to lay down the hurt.

My opponent seized the initiative early and analyzed the first alien tech which revealed where the relevant data was located. Unfortunately for me my opponent had that area well covered by a Odalisque with a Spitfire. He dropped two Yuan Yuan who threw smoke all over the place and allowed his engineer to get close to the alien tech. The tide turned when I brought in my Tiger Soldier armed with a HMG though! With the greater range of the HMG and the Mimetism to make him harder to hit the Tiger Soldier pretty much cleaned house on my left flank, allowing my engineer to make her way to the alien tech and download the data. She made it back to the Pangguling remote but failed the upload roll. Grrr!

On the right flank my Shang Ji charged forward and torched a couple of KTS operatives. That meant my opponent was in retreat and his last few models ran off the table. This of course meant that I didn't have any more chances to try and upload the data and I won with a measly two points! Sometimes it doesn't pay to kill your opponent!

It was a fun game and playing a detailed scenario like this really shows off all the cool stuff in Infinity that you normally don't see in tournament style games. In most of these scenarios Baggage Remotes are either mandatory or helps you greatly if you bring them and although I've got a couple of Pangguling I hadn't managed to assemble them in time for the game. This weekend I took time to put them together and magnetise them though and they certainly are cute little buggers!

The total reaction version.

I need to put together my spec-ops model as well and then it's time for painting!

That's most of what I've been up to. Expect another post going through the new Infinity releases I missed last month as well as the new ones for February (Bao troops!!) tomorrow or so...

A small update

So a couple of weeks ago Spartan Games sent out their newsletter revealing an upcoming fleet of marauders. It's definitely the best looking fleet they've made so far so I decided to not get the Relthoza which I had planned on at first, and wait for the marauders.

The upcoming Marauder fleet. For more info and pictures head over here!

But... then I recieved a 18% off coupon at Maelstrom Games (who also provide free shipping worldwide!) and I just couldn't help myself!

I got the starter fleet (comprised of six frigates, three cruisers and a battleship), a carrier, six escorts and two more regular and one heavy cruiser. I have yet to put them together, but they look really good! Barely any flash and nice crisp details. So although I'm still working on my Yamato fleet it's always nice to have a second fleet that is "official".

Speaking of Yamato. I've basecoated and inked the first three test ships as well as finishing the magnet installation. Works great! Currently they look like this:

Sorry for the yellowish colour. Bad camera and bad lighting...

Cruiser

So that's a quick little update on the proceedings of my Firestorm: Armada projects.

Tomorrow it's time for our third (or second, depending how you count) session of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. After having fought off some nasty beastmen and being welcomed back as heroes at the local inn our intrepid heroes are living the good life... for a day or two...

Comparison shots

People have been asking me to snap some shots comparing the official Spartan Games miniatures and my Yamato ships. So here you go:

Never mind the pin vice, it's only there to keep the balance of the very back heavy Sorylian ship.

As you can see my ships are a fair bit sleeker compared the more chunky resin ship, but that's to be expected considering the different materials. Size wise I think they fit excellent however, and I'm looking forward to battling with them as that should really show them off nicely.

Oh, and I got my paints the other day so hopefully you'll see some developments on that front soon. I think I'll try to paint these models rather quick and dirty, not bothering too much with hightlighting and such. We'll see how it turns out...

Quick Yamato update

It's been pretty slow on the Yamato/Starblazers front. I've been trying to find a grey primer spray but have been out of luck or found ones that are a way to expensive. In the end I went with an acrylic spray from the DIY store, and it's actually pretty ok. Not perfect, but good enough for the job.

So I've primed the Andromeda and three cruisers. Never mind the yellowish colour, it's because of the lighting and my camera.

Booooom!!

It's not all that exciting. I mean... they're just grey. But it's progress and I hope I'll be able to start painting these when I get my vallejo paints next week. Weee!

The other battleship, the frigates and of course Yamato herself is coming as well. I just need to finish up the magnetizing process on them. Oh and the carrier of course, but it needs some modifications.

Firestorm: Yamato Starter Fleet WIP

Today I took some time assembling a starter fleet from my Yamato/Star Blazers models and you can see the result above. Of course these are not yet painted (not by me in any case) and the stands are all wrong, but I just wanted to show you what it looks like at the moment. I think the models are the right size but just not as chunky as the ones from Spartan Games. I like the sleek look though. :)

On to the individual ships:

Frigate (6 cm). I'm considering cutting off the little thing that's jutting out under the prow. Haven't really decided yet though.

Cruiser (10.5 cm). I actually have two version of these. Four that look like this and two that don't have the big spiny looking thing. I'm thinking about removing it actually as it kind of makes them look smaller, if you know what I mean.

Carrier (11.5 cm). This is probably the model that needs the most work. I want to make it more clear that it's a carrier and am planning to make a kind of runway looking thing somewhere. Probably I'll relocate the gun turret and make the front part into a runway with some kind of hangar doors at the end.

Battleship (14 cm). I'll use the Andromeda for now, but have the option of using a standard battleship and then the Andromeda as a flagship later on.

That's all for now I think. I have about twice as much as this but thought I'd start out with the basics. Next up I need to get myself some grey spray paint and some nice Litko stands!

"Fighting with the Gamilons, we won't stop until we've won
Then we'll return and when we arrive, the Earth will survive
With our Star Blazers!"

Ah, how could I forget to show this?!

It's like they've come full circle: Battlestar Galactica was inspired by Star Blazers* and now the new Yamato movie looks like a Japanese version of (the new) BSG. Hehe!

Anyway, it looks like it could be really cool and I bet that a bunch of model releases will coincide with the movie for me to bolster my Firestorm: Armada fleet with. Weee!

*This is only my own very personal opinion, but just watch the first five or so episodes of the original animated series and you're bound to see the similarities!

Earth Defence Force fleet taking shape...

First off, as you've probably seen by now (unless you use an RSS reader) things look a little bit different around here. Yes, I thought it was time to try to spruce things up a little bit and this is the first step. My html-fu is weak but I'll continue to tinker with the blog a bit adding some pages and generally trying to make it look nicer. I hope you'll like it! Oh, and if there's some kind of feature you'd like to see on Fire Broadside let me know in the comments and I'll see what I can do... :)

In other news my search in Akihabara for Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato/宇宙戦艦ヤマト models was succesful! In 1979 Bandai released a bunch of "space panorama" sets with model kits of the different ships from Star Blazers and they happen to be just about the right size for Firestorm: Armada (which is what we're focusing on at the moment). These sets we're re-released last year and I found and bought one of them a couple of weeks ago:

Decisive Battle of Saturn (with Andromeda and two destroyers against three Comet Empire ships)

However, they're not very common in stores over here anymore, and although they're available at Hobbylink Japan I wanted to see if i could find them cheaper by myself. So I turned Akihabara upside down looking for these things, but the only ones I could find was either the one I already had or the set that doesn't include any Earth Defence Force ships. I was just about to give up when I entered a small store near the station and found the two sets I was looking for to be able to make a well rounded fleet, namely:

Earth Defence Force Army (with the Yamato, Andromeda and a regular battleship as well as a Cosmo Tiger against a Comet Empire carrier).

Fierce Fight of Comet Empire City (with a battleship, two destroyers and a patrol cruiser against a Comet Empire dreadnought and a carrier)

I also managed to find an individual pack with two extra destroyers (seen at left) and one with some kind of transport that I thought could be useful as a, well... transport. Apart from these model kits I bought a few the Mechanical Collection trading kits which included two carriers and nine small unmanned cruisers that I think will be the perfect size to use as frigates.

So, all in all I have:
  • One Yamato battleship
  • Two Andromeda battleships
  • Two standard battleships (I think I'll use the Andromeda models as battleships and these as battlecruisers)
  • Two carriers
  • Six destroyers (which I'll use as cruisers)
  • Nine unmanned cruisers (smaller scale so will work as frigates)
The plan is to also get some fighter wings from the actual Star Blazers miniature game. I think that should be enough to get me by for a while. In my experience we rarely play very large games anyway.  It's no use putting the ships together yet as I'm leaving Japan in a few days but expect updates on this project and some pictures next week or so.

Buying these sets has left me with a bunch of White Comet Empire ships as well, and although I didn't give them a second glance at first I've actually started to like them. So I might end up with two Star Blazers fleets!

We're off to outer space, to save the human race!

It's been rather quiet around here lately. I have a couple of friends over from Sweden that I have to herd around Tokyo. Busy busy busy! No time for painting, but there's always time for planning...

As I think I've mentioned my friends have recently got into Firestorm Armada and it seems like quite a good game! However, I'm not that keen on the design of the different fleets; I like the Sorylians, and the Dindrenzi are pretty ok, the upcoming Relthoza also looks like they could he interesting, but the rest are kind of saucy. I don't doubt the high production quality of the miniatures it's just that the designs look kind of... plain to me.

So I've been thinking about and looking around for alternatives.  One problem is that the Firestorm minis are so damn big! The battleships are around 20 cm and the cruisers 10 cm, roughly double the size of almost any other spacehip battle game minis. I've been thinking about different ways to deal with this, but in the end I'll probably just ignore it and simply have a fleet that's a bit out of scale.

I've been a lot into hard(-ish) sci-fi lately (spending time at Atomic Rocket will do that to you) so I've had my eye mostly on realistic or semi-realistic ship designs. Ad Astra games have a lot of really nice looking minis for their Attack Vector: Tactical and Squadron Strike ranges. Irrational Games' Voidstriker models also appeal to me immensely! Especially the British fleet from Squadron Strike and the belter fleet from Voidstriker. Beautiful stuff!
The Squadron Strike miniatures are even smaller than normal though, with the battleship not measuring more than 5.5 cm...

 Belter fleet from Voidstriker.

I've also been looking at the Jun-ila from With Hostile Intent and the Deisho of Cold Navy. They don't have the same realistic vibe as the ones above, but are really cool looking nevertheless. I think I'm leaning towards the Deisho as they have quite a few different ships available and seem to be of a decent size as well. And I like the Sulaco-style look! :)

Another option that I kind of stumbled across when looking through a model store here in Tokyo is to use models from the Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) series. I bought a couple of boxes with a few different models that I think would actually fit rather well with the Firestorm miniatures, size-wise at least. And I found a site selling smaller scaled minis as well that I could use for frigates and escorts. Hmm... so many choices!

The retro style of Yamato is really awesome, just have a look at these:

Cruiser.

Battleship Andromeda.

More pictures of these amazing scratch built models here.
