Earth Defence Force fleet for Firestorm: Armada

A few months ago my friends started getting into Firestorm: Armada by Spartan Games (who've earlier had great success with Uncharted Seas). We've tried a few different spaceship battle games and it seems like F:A might be the one that suits our play style the best. I haven't tried it yet, but it certainly looks intriguing and I'm looking forward to my first battle!

However, I was never really that sold on the actual miniatures. The quality seems to be top notch and it's cool that they are so big (although... more on that later) but the design never really "popped" for me. I liked the Sorylians, and the Dindrenzi was pretty ok, but the Terrans and Aquans left me cold. So I decided to shop around for alternatives, and here is when the hugeness of the models really became a problem.

In practically every other space battle games on the market few if any ships are larger than 10-12 centimeter, and in F:A that's just a little larger than a standard cruiser! And battleships can be a whopping 18 cm! So after thinking about it I decided to ignore the size difference and simply have smaller ships in my fleet. Now it was just the matter of choosing exactly which fleet. You can read about the different alternatives I was pondering in this post.

I was leaning toward the Deisho from Cold Navy but then I came across some perfectly sized (ie bigger!) models of the ships from the old Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato, aka Star Blazers, and I knew I had found my fleet! It took some time locating enough kits to make a fleet, but what I have now roughly equals two starter fleets plus a couple of carriers, so it should hopefully last me for a while. I also managed to snag some single ships that I plan to use as battlecruisers when they are released, and I'll get fighters from the Star Blazers miniature game.

Now, I must admit that after having browsed the Spartan Games forums and seen some fleets with much better paint jobs than the "official" fleets', I've actually grown to like them. There are still many spaceship miniatures out there that I like better, but I guess they can look pretty cool with a good paint job. And the renders they've shown of the Relthoza looks interesting...
