Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd ed.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has been a staple game in our gaming group. Together with Call of Cthulhu it's probably the game we've played the most. Back in the day we played The Enemy Within using the first edition rules. We never actually finished (only made it as far as Death on the Reik actually) but we had a great time!

As second edition was released by Black Industries we picked it up again, this time trying out their take the epic campaign in the form of Paths of the Damned. Although it doesn't hold a candle to The Enemy Within we still had a lot of fun, but as usual only managed to finish the first.

I think most people were shocked when Black Industries announced their imminent demise back in early 2008. Especially since they'd just released Dark Heresy which was selling like hot-cakes! After a period of uncertainty it was revealed that Fantasy Flight Games had managed to snag the license for producing board and roleplaying games set within the universes created by Games Workshop and I must say I couldn't have been happier. I'd been a great fan of FFG since before and I knew they made quality work so I was really looking forward to this.

FFG released a few books for second edition (I've heard a lot of good about The Thousand Thrones!) but in the end they decided to create an entirely new edition that was released in November 2009. This time it wasn't simply updated rules and streamlining, like from first to second edition, but an entirely new system that is pretty much unique within the roleplaying community. There's been a lot of debate about the merits of this new system, and I won't bore you with it here, but me and my group like it so far. And since it seems to sell well I guess the majority of people agree.

Anyway, we started our campaign in July 2010 and have managed about ten sessions so far. We started out trying the demo scenario A Day Late, A Shilling Short (twice actually) then made our way into the intro adventure in the rulebook, An Eye for an Eye and we're now in the middle of The Gathering Storm. It's going well so far although we've had a couple of character deaths. Here's a quick introduction to our motley group of ne'er-do-wells:

SPOILERS below!

Dieter Diebman (and Rex) - Ratcatcher

Franz Bieber - Hunter

Snorri Kurgansson - Troll Slayer
(proper picture pending)

Hans Fleischman - Initiate of Sigmar

The restless dead
These are characters who have met their final fate. Being it from an axe to the head, falling to the powers of Chaos or simply incurable insanity!

Heinrich - Apprentice Grey Wizard
This poor apprentice met his demise in the marshlands called the Oberslecht near Stromdorf. He tried to sneak away with a powerful magical artifact but its owner, beastman chieftan Izka Madtooth, discovered him and promptly impaled the wizard on his horns.

Mannfred Prangel - Soldier
A strong fighter with a iron disciplin who stood against such foes as Izka the beastman chief and Olaus Stichelm the wight. However, against the dark magic of the necromancer Lazarus Mourn his shield and armour provided no defence. After having killed the necromancer once he rose again and sucked the last life force from the already heavily wounded Mannfred, leaving him a shrivelled husk!
