Gūijiă with a Gŭiláng sniper for scale. |
Any of you elephants out there reading this blog might remember that I said that my Gūijiă TAG would be finished next week, back in November last year. Well, here we are nine months later and my baby is finally done! Hehe! Actually this is somewhat of a habit of mine when it comes to painting larger Infinity stuff. Both my Aragoto and my Sù-Jiàn were left half finished for months before I finally got around to squaring them out. Generally, I get tired of painting large models that require lots of detailing. My Dust Warfare mecha I knocked out in an evening or two, but those were also just spray, wash and drybrush - easy. For Infinity I want to try to do better than that.
Gundam decals for some extra detailing. Should get some more sheets, they're very useful! |
That gun... *sigh* |
In any case I'm happy simply to finally have a TAG painted! Granted it's not one of those fancy "trick TAGs" like the Cutter with its TO camo or the Yoroi with its cute ambulatory mines, but it has solid stats and can bring a heavy grenade launcher and that is all I ask for. :)
Next up painting wise is probably some spaceships for Jovian Chronicles, but after that I think I might just get cracking on my remotes. Now that I have figured out the colour scheme...
Looks really good. I like the understated colour scheme rather than the studio colours. I picked the Yu Jing faction purely on this model (Appleseed Landmate!). I'll have to get my Guijia assembled, rumours of 3rd Ed. have rekindled interest in my area.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yepp, I see we're of the same breed. Masamune brought so much techie goodness back in the nineties! :D
DeleteI really like what we've seen so far of N3! It seems like it will bring on some more drastic changes than 2nd ed did (which was more of a revision). I'm hoping for a return for TAGs and some more hacking/e-war. Either way Infinity is very hot right now.
I'm in the same boat, wanting to get back to Infinity once I finish my Deadzone stuff. 3rd Edition is partly the reason though mostly it's quitting Dota II.
ReplyDeleteWhat techniques are you using for your blending of gradients?
For something that size I'd go with very thin glazes, ending my brush strokes in the direction I am glazing. So if I'm glazing from light to dark I end my stroke in the dark.
Although lately I've been using a style where I make 5-7 mixes of my colour in a gradiant. Without cleaning my brush and working quickly I just go from dark to light, clean my brush, light to dark. Once I'm happy I thin the colours heavily and glaze to smooth the blend. Usually there's less smoothing this way and it goes really fast. It's how I painted my Infinity stuff, especially my Zero and Zond. The Alguaciles I was still practicing, and the Intruder and Alguacile HMG I painted in the same way but working much quicker.
My Infinity Gallery
Hey Tyler! I'm not playing (or painting) nearly as much Infinity as I would like to, but N3 certainly fired up my motivation
DeleteI'm pretty much using the technique you describe, however I'm impatient so haven't done as many gradients as I probably should. Still, I feel this is mainly a good thing as I'm trying to move towards finishing my models quicker even though I might have to compromise a bit of the quality. Hopefully I'll get my hands on an airbrush before the end of the year so that should make painting larger stuff like this, and terrain, quicker.
Your stuff looks great! :)
Models look great. Excellent execution of greys and muted colors, which is generally hard to do (less forgiving then bright vibrant ones)
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg! I'm very much a muted colours kind of guy and actually find it difficult to paint more vibrant stuff. Even when I try I often end up with a muted version of the colour I'm after out of sheer habit! Hehe!
DeleteWell, you certainly have done a good job for painting in the git'r'done style. It's not as fun as lavishing attention but it does feel nice to finish stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what your plans are for an airbrush. I recently picked up an Iwata NEO and it has been working well. It's a cheap brush like the Chinese brushes you can buy on Ebay but it has an Iwata warranty if you have trouble.
Really your biggest expense will be the compressor and fittings. You should check your local classifieds. That's where I got mine.
Well, I often find myself getting bored painting large models. Although I enjoy painting I might enjoy being done more. Hehe!
DeleteAs for the airbrush I think I'm going to try and find a decent and quiet(ish) compressor before I start looking for the actual brush. Since we live in an apartment it can't be too loud.
Wich colours did you used to paint the guijia?
ReplyDeleteHmm... currently abroad so don't have access to my paints. But if I remember correctly the grey is VMC Shadow Grey mixed with black for shading and sky grey for highlights. The white is VMC off-white mixed with some light brown colour for shading and ivory/white for highlights.
DeleteHope that helps. :)
Shadow Grey doens't exist, does it? Might be Blue Grey instead.
DeleteI have shadow grey Ill try, thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh, it does? Then maybe I'm not going senile after all! :D
DeleteGood luck with the painting.
