June Releases for Infinity!

As you might have noticed the official Infinity site is/was down and by now you all know what that means, the new releases have been announced! Actually they were announced on Facebook first which is par for the course now so remember to like Corvus Belli there if you want the news as soon as possible. This months releases are especially interesting as they contain a lot of stuff that we don't really know anything about; stuff that we will see in the upcoming scenario/campaign book. Speaking of which, we've still not had any word on when we can expect to see it released. Sure, it can't be long now with all these fancy new models hitting the streets but still... even a rough release window would be welcome.

Anyway, let's have a look at the miniatures...

Let's dive in at the deep end and have a look at the completely new Cadmus-Naish Sheeskiin for the Combined Army. It's a really cool looking model, obviously a female Cadmus of some kind. She's got a neat glaive style close combat weapon and a nanopulser and she has a quite impossing "I dare you" kind of pose going on. The skirt looking thing attached to her butt looks a bit weird simply because it's attached to her butt. I think it would feel more natural if it was part of some coat she was wearing. She's quite a looker as well which actually bothers me. The Shaasvasti generally look like sinister, nasty bug aliens with almost no human features, yet this alien babe could probably make good money in a Las Vegas strip club. Weird! I can buy that the Zerat is a bit more human looking seeing as the Morat are ape-ish in appearance in general, and the Speculo works as well because she has her Impersonation going on. Hopefully her fluff will explain it in someway. As for rules we don't know much except her armament and that she has a Nanoscreen (which is cool!).

EDIT: Just minutes after posting this it occured to me that she's a Cadmus and naturally has the Striga skill. So the reason she's looking human is because she's just morpho-scanned some poor sucker. Blork!

Next up is another newbie: a Nomad Riot Grrl! The unit got a bit of a teaser in CB's recent patch vote/contest where the unit's name popped up. I can't make up my mind about this miniature. Parts of it I love parts of it I... don't love as much. The hard armour parts are great looking and the open helmet is awesome! It kind of looks like she's simply opened her visor. The bionic eye effect that Angel has given her is spot on as well. I'm not so sure abou the body glove she's wearing though. First off it feels weird having all this hard armour everywhere except where it's most important - the torso! There is also the sculpted nipples that just look silly and, even worse, the white little "landing strip" at her crotch. Hmm. Still I like the model overall and I think it has a lot of things going for it (and the Nomad Spitfire helps)! What I'd really like to see is some more Riot Grrls before I pass my judgement on them as a whole. While we don't know the rules for her yet, just having another heavy infantry added to your Nomad forces is enough to get excited about! This actually doubles their available HI's. Haha!

Alright, by now you're proper excited about the new stuff and thoughts are spinning around in your head about their prospective stats and everythings. So let's dial it down a notch and have a look at a good old Ariadnan Métros. We saw the Merovingian starter released a few months ago (which tempted me sorely!) and the Métros are the backbone of that sectorial army. Here we have the HMG toting version in all its brooding glory! The Métros are probably my favourite line infantry as they have so much character in their sculpts and this guy adds even more. The hood is an inspired choice as it's evoactive and menacing at the same time. This model has certainly pushed me a little closer to getting a Merovingian sectorial force. In game he's just a regular line infantry guy, so nothing to write home about really. I probably wouldn't take him in a regular Ariadna force (although he is cheap!) but as part of a link team it's another matter entirely!

Ready for a bit of new stuff again? Ok, this one is only half new so you can stop tensing up. It's a Haqqislam Hassassin Muyib armed with a... Heavy Rocket Launcher! The Muyib are some of my favourite Haqqislam models, I think it's something about their insect looking helmets that does it for me. This guy comes in a nice natural looking pose, not too static (which we've seen a lot of for Haqqislam recently) which is good. I quite like the new rocket launcher, it's a little bit busy but looks intimidating enough. Rumours say that it comes with Fire ammunition which just sounds plain nasty! I thought I'd compare it to the regular Haqqislam Missile Launcher until I realized there isn't a model for it yet. There are only two troop types who can take Missile Launchers and they're both cheap line infantry so perhaps this is a way of remedying that. I'm interested to see how the Rocket Launcher will be different from the Missile Launcher...

Last but certainly not least we have the new and improved Shaolin Monks for Yu Jing! Wooo! These have been rumoured for a while now and I've been holding off on getting any of the old monks even though I was anxious to try them out in game. While the old sculpts weren't bad per se (I quite like the kicking guy) that kind of extreme dynamic poses rarely work well in models, even when made by the talended people at Corvus Belli. These resculpts are a bit more restrained but damn, they're certainly a lot more beautiful! There's been a bit of a debate over at the official forums about whether these kinds of multi-part boxed sets are good or not (here and here). Since there's basically only two different bodies shared among the four miniatures some of the poses won't be as natural or dynamic looking if they were all unique, says the detractors. And while I agree in principal, the difference is most of the time negligible, so I think it's well worth it. I really like the staffs that has been added as they look absolutely spectacular and brings an entire new level of dynamics to the models. The Shaolin open hands are really cool as well. Then we have the Combi Rifle and the Chain Rifle armed monks (the latter who can also either wield a sword or a Smoke Grenade) who don't have the same dramatic trappings as their staff wielding friends but still look great simply thanks to the contrast of the hi-tech guns and the traditional monk's robe!

In game they're similar to my beloved Kuang Shi, that is to say cheap and Impetuous. They are also Irregular which means they don't share their order with the rest of the force. They are great melee fighters and also have sense enough to bring their own Smoke Grenades with them! This should help to get them close to the enemy as their low BS of 9 means they won't hit much with any long ranged weapon they choose to bring. Another interesting tidbit was mentioned in the Beasts of War preview, namely that they're part of a Yu Jing sectorial... except they aren't. Not yet anyway. We know that ALEPH is getting a new sectorial in the new book, but so far nothing about the other factions. Have CB been sneaky and meant to include more all along? I hope so. Either way I'm really eager to get my hands on these guys!

And that's it! My Best Model(s) of the Month award goes to the awesome looking Monks! With honourable mentions going to the Riot Grrl (see! I can't make up my mind about her!). All good releases though, even though the alien babe bothers me a bit. I still won't be entirely happy with any Infinity releases until we see the book though. While I'm still having fun playing regular old pitched battles and some YAMS now and then I really, reeeeeally want to see that book released!

Perhaps next month... eh, CB?

Dredd Trailer - Some Thoughts

As you might know I've dived back into the futuristic dystopian world of Judge Dredd that I used to spend a lot of time reading about during my teen years. I've started exploring the (free) miniatures game from Mongoose, I've bought the first three Complete Case Files albums to refresh my memories and I've eagerly awaited the trailer for the new Dredd movie starring Karl Urban and Lena Heady. We were shown a brief glimpse of it yesterday but here it is in glorious HD. Let's watch...

My initial thoughts is that I like the overall style (however derivative) but that a lot of what made Judge Dredd unique is missing. It feels like director Pete Travis wanted to go the Chris Nolan/Batman route and make it into a grittier more "realistic" take on the original comic, problem is that the original comic is way over the top silly most of the time! And I mean this in a good way! The whole eighties sci-fi aesthetic is gone, which is to be expected, but it hasn't been replaced by oughties sci-fi aesthetics it has simply been replaced with a by-the-numbers near future trash dystopia. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with that per se, but if Karl Urban would've worn a different helmet you wouldn't bee able to tell it was a Judge Dredd movie.

While the 1995 movie with Stallone as Dredd was horrible in all kinds of ways it did manage to transfer the comic book Mega City 1 onto the silver screen fairly well. While it embraced the camp of the comic a little bit too much it seems to me that the new movie doesn't embrace it enough. Could you imagine the Dredd of this trailer battling the infamous ape gang featuring Fast Eek and Joe Bananas? Or discontent fatties with bellywheels?! Nope, I don't think either exists here. Perhaps there will be yet another version in another 13 years that manage to find the right balance.

Now, I shouldn't be too negative about it since I actually like a lot of what we're seeing here. I'm a fan of near future dystopian settings so in that way I shouldn't complain. I'm hoping to see a cool sci-fi action movie featuring Judge Dredd but not really featuring the true craziness of Mega City 1. It's like a mirror image of how I view John Milius' Conan - as a movie set in Hyboria but not featuring Conan - and I love that film! Hopefully Dredd will manage something similar and actually bring its own piece of flavour to the ginormous cake that is Judge Dredd!

Finally I can't end this post without talking about how similar the movie looks to Indonesian produced (but Welsh directed!) action move The Raid - Redemption. The plot is pretty much identical only we get two judges instead of 20 SWAT troopers (seems like an even trade, right?). To save you some time, here's the trailer for that movie:

I read somewhere that Dredd actually began production before The Raid, but still... striking similarities, eh? Check it out by the way, it's pretty cool!

In other Dredd related news a package arrived the other day containting an Ape gang for me and a Sky Surfer gang for Anders. Thanks to @SnowyHoobinoo over at ThisWayLeads (excellent blog, check it out!) for letting me know of the IGUK sale! We need to put these guys together so we can start bashing it out properly. I haven't looked at the surfers yet but I really like the ape minis. Very nice sculpts! As soon as I'm done with my Yu Jing doctor and engineer (and their servant bots) I think I'll try painting a chimp. Ha!

Guest Painting: Infinity Bagh-Mari!

Hello fellow Mayanauts! Last year me, my friend Anders and Martin3 bought an Infinity army deal each during Beasts of War's Infinity week. A little bit later another friend, Martin2 (aka Beast), got interested as well and bought two regular starters and a few extra minis for each. He bought Yu Jing, same as me, and the Acontecimento sectorial. The minis have been knocking about his drawers for all this time but now as he's home on parental leave he's finding the time to get some paint onto them. Thankfully he started with the PanO!

Beast (haha!) is an accomplished painter but doesn't have a blog of his own, so I thought it'd share his work with the rest of the world here on Fire Broadside! Here's the finished Bagh-Mari.

Now, this is a guy who's only experience of models outside of GW (as far as I know) is Flames of War and one ship each for Full Thrust and Firestorm: Armada. So assembling and painting an Infinity miniature was a novel experience. He had some trouble with the small antennas during assembly and thought it was a bit of a hassle to paint because of all the details on the figure. I don't think it discouraged him though, hopefully the other way around!

The first two finished Infinity figures. Congratulations and welcome to the party!

I remember having similar feelings when painting my first Yu Jing; I just kept running into small details I had missed and had to go back again and again. But it all fell into place by the time I had finished my second one. It's just a great experience taking your time with the miniatures and painting each individually (or in pairs sometimes). Certainly gives a greater feeling of personalization that I enjoy immensely. While I need to start tackle larger scale army painting for Dust Warfare it will not be anything like painting my Infinity minis.

Anyway, I think Beast has done a smashing job on this Bagh-Mari! I know he prefers more open areas as flat spaces is a strongpoint of his, but this looks great as well (WIP shot on the left). The green colour goes well with the brown fatigues creating a bit more earthy, naturalistic tone to the model compared to the studio paintjob. I like it as it does feel like something you'd find sneaking through the jungle!

Beast mentioned that he'd like to try out some OSL at a later point (good guide for it here) and I think it would help to bring more life out of the model. Next up we'll likely see an Acontecimento Regular possibly followed by a Knight of Montesa. I know he's been eyeing the new Mulebots as well, which would come in handy considering the upcoming scenario book.

I'll be sure to share more of his stuff as they turn up!

As for myself, I sat down and started re-basing some of my Yu Jing. I haven't done it with any of my painted models yet, only basecoated or metal ones so far. I think some good varnish is needed first so I don't damage the painted minis too much during the process.

I'm not quite sure what to paint next for Infinity. I'm leaning towards my doctors and engineer though. I started painting a total reaction remote so perhaps I should finisht that instead. Hmm...

Dust Warfare Review: SSU Vehicles (and Chinese Volunteers)

My recent additions.

Last week I got another two large boxes in the mail and happily tore them apart to reveal the Operation Zverograd campaign box and the Mil Mi-45 helicopter that also comes with a squad of Chinese Volunteers. Of course the Zverograd box also contains the SSU hero Koshka and her modified walker Grand'ma (aka Babushka) as well as a single storey ruined building. So by now I've managed to acquire all the currently available SSU miniatures! They amount to about the same as what you get for one faction in the original starter set, except for twice the cost. Haha! Well, at least they look better.

Overview

I don't want to repeat myself too much here as most of what I wrote in my last review still applies. Naturally the same colour and the same, somewhat soft, plastic for the Chinese infantry. However the vehicles are made from sterner stuff. The plastic is a lot more similar to what you're used to seeing in regular model kits - much harder but a bit more brittle. While I wouldn't worry if I dropped a Dust infantry model on the floor I think dropping a vehicle would inflict quite some damage!

I've always thought of the walkers (and now helicopters) as the big stars of the Dust line. While I quite like the look of the infantry and they're fairly well sculpted, the walkers is the big draw for me. So it's nice that they're given a bit of extra attention with the better plastic and additional detailing.

That being said let's have a look at the miniatures! Hopefully with some better pictures this time around...

Mil Mi-45 Helicopter
It looks big and fat...

When I first saw the Mil Mi-45 helicopter in the FFG previews I thought it looked horrible (and I said as much here)! But then as more pictures surfaced of it from different angles I started to feel less adverse towards it. I still worried it would look weird, but not as much as I did when I first saw it. Now having been able to examine it for myself I'm glad that my fears were (mostly) unfounded. While it still looks a bit awkward it's more awkward in an ugly duckling sense than in a this-looks-like-a-toy sense. So, fairly similar to its real world counterparts, the Mil Mi-4 and the Ka-25.

but it's quite thin actually.

It comes pretty much assembled with only the torso of the pilot and the cockpit window left to put together. I was happy to see this as I was a little worried that those things would be pre-assembled hence more difficult to paint. There is a little bit of detailing in the cockpit, enough to get the point across. The pilot looks like a pilot and has the same head as the Medvedi mechanic (goggles are goggles I guess). The vehicle is fairly thin if you look at it straight on but this actually helps to lessen the toy aspect of it. There are three round hatches on each side but unfortunately they are simply holes and not actual windows. Bit of a shame I think but easy enough to add yourself I suppose. The rear doors look a little unpractical I think, removing a bit of the floor as they open, but that's exactly what the real Mi-4 looked like so par for the course I suppose.

The rear doors, and no windows.

The blades spin and the quad machineguns tilt up and down a little, that's about as much movement you're going to get out of it. If you feel adventurous I think it would be fairly easy to open up the back doors. Would be nice to model some interior (and bubble windows)! The whole tail assembly also looks better in person, not as stubby and actually kind of functional. Although I keep wondering if the central pipe is supposed to be some kind of rocket exhaust! Hehe!

The pilot looking rather smug up there in the air!

It comes with a walker sized base and a clear plastic flying stand. It can be easily attached to the helicopter and snaps fit close enough that you can actually lift the model and the stand and base will follow. It's just about the right height to convey the sense of flight and look impressive on the table while not so tall that it'll get in the way.

When it comes to in game performance we need to wait for the Zverograd book for sure, but it seems to be able to take a bit of punishment (six hits) while dishing out a decent amount of anti infantry fire. Of course the main use of it is its eight model carrying capacity (which I wonder if it might be a hint at the numbers of infantry in an Armor 1 squad).

I'm actually a lot happier with the Mil Mi-45 than I thought I would be! While there still are a couple of things that I'm not thrilled about  it's a pretty cool model overall. Also, I'm sure it'll provide valuable duty as a transport to get my powerful, but short range, infantry into engagement range.

Chinese Volunteers
The wonky gun guy is on the right.

Now let's have a look at the Chinese infantry that comes with the helicopter as well. They have the same onesies and cuirass as the regular Russian infantry but have cute little caps instead of helmets and a proper looking backpack instead of just a... sack. They are all armed with submachine guns so no exciting heavy weapon unfortunately, but one of them is in a grenade throwing pose that helps adding some diversity and dynamics to the squad. The Allies could do with a bit more of this! The Axis have their panzerfausts and gasmasks to mix things up a bit but the Allied Armor 2 infantry all look the same!

Anyway, in spite of their simplicity I really like these minis! They feel like a group of boy scouts with guns, that the Russian commanders then simply use as cannon fodder. The heads actually manage to have an Asian feel to theem without going into stereotype/charicature territory. There's about the same amount of mold lines as the other infantry, so a little bit but nothing excessive. They came with one bent gun that I think got bent because of how the arms attach to the body. This is worse than a bent barrel as I imagine its harder to fix, althoguh I haven't tried yet.

Their game stats looks to be fairly modest. No heavy weapons and no impressive special skills besides Agile (meaning they're good at running away basically). However, they are very cheap so could easily be used as a screening squad to protect better, more expensive troops.

I'm not entirely sure why FFG decided to only sell them as a package deal with the helicopter as I imagine that will mean you'll rarely see more than one of these squads on the battlefield at once. Maybe that was the whole idea. Hmm...

Anyway I quite like them and I'm just trying to decide how to paint them. They do look good in the light blue of the studio models so I might go with that if I can't come up with anything better. I tried Googling Chinese volunteers as I imagine they're based on some historical infantry force but couldn't really find anything. Any WWII buffs out there who care to help?

Koskha and Babushka
Good to have some backup!

In the Operation Zverograd campaign box you get the SSU hero Koshka, her walker Grand'Ma (or babushka as I'll refer to it) and a one storey semi ruined building. Then there is the rule/campaign book itself and two large poster maps for use with Dust Tactics. As these aren't much use for Dust Warfare player (besides fluff and some hints at future releases) I won't go into them further. I'll actually leave the building as well, even though it does have lots of use for me as well. I simply want to concentrate on the models.

Koshka comes sporting some tight fitting piloting overall (with ample cleavage) and a pilots cap. She's aiming her grenade pistol and looks like she means business! It's a quite modest model, no big weapons or armour pieces but I like her in this way. As I said, she's does look like she means businesses. I might do something about the fur collar though as it's kind of hard to make out what it actually is from a distance. In fact, I thought it was her hair sticking out from under her cap until I actually had the model in my hand. It might work simply bending it downwards so the collar is resting more on her shoulders. Apart from that she looks good, while not spectacular.

She's nothing really amazing in game but she is the first hero with the Pilot skill. She also has Fighting Spirit meaning she can pack an extra mean punch once per battle (preferably while in her walker). Besides that her most practical feature is likely her grenade pistol since it will remove the benefit of cover from the target squad. However she's not meant to run around on foot, she's supposed to pilot Babushka!

Stomp, stomp, stomp!

Which leads us to her personalised walker! Apart from the Otto from Dust Models this is our first look at the new Russian KV-47 walker and it's a lovely piece of plastic! Quite a bit smaller and sturdier than the Axis and Allies walkers the design is just as good or better. It comes fully assembled except for the arms which need mounting. Babushka comes in a running pose which gives it a bit more of a dynamic look than the regular, static KV-47 model. However the legs are all jointed and I imagine you could probably take it apart and pose the legs anyway you wished with a little bit of work. This is certainly a plus in my book as I would like to try my hand on some different poses!

The body is sturdy and combined with the lack of a head and bent knees make the whole model look quite squat. The hatch at the top of the body is glued shut, but again could probably be forced open fairly easy if you want to put the pilot looking out or something. I know I will do that on one of mine at least. It's interesting that the KV-47 actually has hands holding the triggers for the guns, putting it more into Japanese VOTOMS/Gundam camp than the western Mechwarrior camp we've seen so far. I really like this but I know that some of you out there don't like the slight "humanization" of the mecha. Oh well, this just makes me more curious about the Japanese and their samurai walkers!

It has two large tanks on the back, similar to the Fury of Ivan, which I guess is the reason your walkers get no armour save when shot from behind. Haha! In its right hand it carries a howitzer and in its left a "Sulfur Jet", aka flamethrower. I think the model looks its best (and most realistic) when the arms are actually posed like a human running. This way you get the right balance and it really looks like Babushka is pushing forwards! I've seen her posed with both arms forward which I think just makes it look like its waddling and/or falling over. The arms are quite long as well so you need to position them correctly or they'll touch the ground. Again you could easily crack the joins apart and glue them together any way you want.

There are a few mold lines and a little bit of flash here and there that needs cleaning, but it's nothing excessive. The only real flaw I could find was a small area right in front of the hatch where there's a small gap in the hull. Easily fillable, but there nonetheless.

Looking at Babushka's Dust Tactics stats the most eyebrow raising item might be her five hit points, which I've heard all KV-47 walkers will have. It's not a big different but it does mean they can take a bit more punishment and still keep going. That's Russian redundant engineering for you! It has the Assault skill which I think seems to be a tricky skill to use wisely. Maybe I just need to figure it out. One other valuable bit is that the howitzer is a grenade weapon, meaning you don't get any cover bonus when shot by it. I think this can be a quite a big thing as getting entrenched infantry out of a building can take some time, especially if they have armour 3! It seems to me that the way you want to use Koskha and Babushka is to make it up the table, firing at infantry as you go and then quickly close the gap and go to town with your sulfur thrower. It should be enough to toast most infantry and should you come across another walker you can use the Fighting Spirit to be able to knock it out.

I really like the KV-47 models and I imagine I'll be getting a few of them at least! Babushka will surely get some extra attention during painting, and will hopefully make for a nice centerpiece. I think this is the way to make Dust Tactics expansions attractive for us Warfare players as well. Pop a walker and some terrain in there and it'll be worth getting for all of us.

Conclusion
Koshka in a slightly different position.

Like I said in the beginning the walkers and vehicles are the stars of the Dust line and the Mil Mi-45 and the KV-47 certainly underlines that. The helicopter is nice and clunky and not as toy-like as I first feared while Babushka is simply awe inspiring as it's lumbering across the battlefield. The Chinese Volunteers are fairly simple, but for some reason I'm eager to get some paint on them as I think they have a lot of character. Two boxes worth getting if you plan on making an SSU army. Financially I feel I must recommend the helicopter box more as you simply get more bang for your buck and as you can easily assemble Babushka from the parts in a regular KV-47 box. However, the Koshka model and the ruined building makes for added value for sure.

The SSU Ohotniki - Rifle Squad - and the SSU Specialists have just been released and I want to get my grubby little hands on them! Their snipers sound really cool with their long range rifles that can even damage medium walkers. So you can expect seeing reviews of those squads later in the month and perhaps another after action report or two as we're probably getting stuck in again tomorrow with some more Judge Dredd and some more Dust Warfare.

Now if we could just get some news, any news, about the Zverograd book for Dust Warfare. I want to read up on my little plastic men! Haha!
